Red Mahogany

Red Mahogany” is a common name used for several distinct species of wood, most commonly referring to the Australian hardwood species Eucalyptus pellita and Eucalyptus resinifera or sometimes the a rich, red-hued timber of “genuine” Swietenia mahogany.

Appearance & Texture

  • Color: The heartwood is renowned for its deep, rich red to dark red coloring, which deepens over time. The sapwood is a contrasting pale or creamy white.
  • Grain: The grain is generally straight but can be interlocked, which, along with occasional gum veins, can produce a visually attractive, rippled figure.
  • Texture: It has a uniform, medium to coarse, and open texture.
  • Odor: The wood has no distinct odor.

Strength & Durability

  • Hardness & Density: Red Mahogany is an incredibly dense and very hard wood, making it highly durable. The Australian variety (Eucalyptus resinifera) has a Janka hardness rating of approximately 2,697 lbf (pounds-force), making it significantly harder than woods like white oak or hard maple.
  • Durability: The heartwood is highly resistant to rot, fungal decay, and termite attacks, rated as Class 1 for above-ground use (life expectancy over 40 years) and Class 2 for in-ground use (life expectancy 15-25 years).
  • Stability: The wood dries with minimal defects and offers good stability when properly seasoned.

Common Uses

Red Mahogany’s combination of extreme durability, strength, and rich color makes it highly versatile:
  •
Flooring: A premium choice for both residential and commercial flooring, particularly in high-traffic areas, due to its exceptional hardness and wear resistance.
    • Heavy Construction: Its strength makes it suitable for engineering applications like wharf and bridge construction, railway sleepers, and utility poles.
    • Outdoor Use: Its natural resistance to moisture and pests makes it excellent for exterior cladding, fencing, garden furniture, and landscaping retaining walls.
    • Fine Furniture: Used for quality indoor and outdoor furniture due to its stunning color and finish.
    • Boat Building: The wood’s water resistance makes it suitable for specific boat building components.

Sustainability

The Australian species of Red Mahogany (Eucalyptus pellita and Eucalyptus resinifera) are widely grown in plantations in Australia, Africa, and Asia, making them a sustainable source of durable hardwood. This offers an ethical alternative to genuine mahogany species (Swietenia spp.), which face significant conservation challenges and trade restrictions due to historical overharvesting.
